Aiming Higher Consultants

October 7, 2010

Volume 2, Issue 18

Dear Friend,

Exciting Changes are in the Air!
With the change of seasons upon us, we are excited to announce a change at Aiming Higher Consultants as well.  While we will continue to send you occasional announcements via this system, our “Training for Excellence” articles are moving to a blog format.  This will allow easier interaction with you and a more flexible schedule.  If you would like to subscribe to the blog (so you are e-mailed when a new article is posted), just click the orange icon at the bottom left of the screen to subscribe.  I’m sorry I can’t make life easier and do that for you, but anti-spam laws won’t allow that.

Blessings!

Letters of Recommendation that Get Results!

Whether your child is applying to a summer program, gifted program, special scholarship, or college, they will need several letters of recommendation. These letters should be a powerful advocate for your child. However, in truth, they rarely do much good. Why? The recommender is busy and writes a very generic letter. They are well intentioned, but honestly don’t know how to write differently.

If you would like to help your recommenders do a great job for your student, this four-page professionally produced guide will explain what committees are looking for and how to do the best job possible.  We've just added this resource containing my secrets to great recommendation letters to our store. Click here for your copy.

Great Books

I have just discovered a wonderful resource book that is a breath of fresh air in the crazy world of college admissions.  Cal Newport has a Ph.D. from MIT in Theoretical Computer Science (the same degree my son is working on).  Given his academic background, it is no wonder that his book has a scientific feel - he offers hypotheses instead of points.  But don’t let that scare you off from his fabulous advice!  While he goes about his presentation in a different way, he is essentially saying the same thing I’ve been telling clients for years - doing too much makes you way less impressive.

How to Be a High School Superstar:  A Revolutionary Plan to Get into College by Standing Out Without Burning Out is addressed to students, but is invaluable for parents as well.  My only argument with the content is that I feel the skills to be successful with his recommendations are things we need to be developing from early childhood.  And, those are exactly the kinds of things we discuss in “Training for Excellence!”  I recommend How to Be a High School Superstar for anyone with junior high students on up.  Click here for more information.

If you have a senior in high school or a new college freshman, Newport’s two college books are also stellar.  They would make a fabulous graduation gift!  How to Win at College and  How to Become a Straight-A Student are loaded with great information.  Check them out here.
