The Best Present to Give Your Kids This Christmas
By Jeannette Webb
My son called this morning. We chatted about his research, what was happening at his church, various small and delightful things. As the conversation began to slow, my eyes went back to the project waiting on my computer screen. Maybe I could just get a few things done in between thoughts. . . . Sensing my distraction, he wrapped the conversation so as not to interrupt my work. Caught! Again.
We live in a world that values multi-tasking, but science is now proving that quality suffers when we attempt it. If we try to focus on multiple things, we get distracted. None of the things gets our full attention and consequently none of them are done well.
As a busy homeschool mom, I made it my priority to be home for my kids. But even though my goal was to put them first – to really be there for them, my tendency is to get the list done. When I step into task-oriented mode, everything on the periphery fades into oblivion. This same thing can happen when I’m thinking. I get lost in my contemplations and am unaware of the people and events swirling around me.
Because I can be Queen of Distracted, I’ve had to learn to establish boundaries for myself. When I’m with a friend, my cell phone ringer is turned off and the phone is buried deep in my purse, not to be retrieved until we part. When my husband comes home, the computer is shut down. When my kids are home for the holidays, my office closes. The people that I love deserve the best I have to give and that means walking away from distraction.
This Christmas, I encourage you to skip the crowded malls, save your bank account, and still give your kids the best gift ever. Be fully present. It’s the best present of all and the only gift that lasts.

Yes! This gift is the perfect thing to give. I am also easily distracted and got into the habit of multi-tasking. It's amazing how much time we gained in our days because of the changes I made in my own habits. Yes, "being present" is a great gift we can give. Thank you for the encouragement.
Isn’t it funny that the thing that ususally need to change is ourselves? When I stay in the game and focus, amazing things happen in my family!
