The college application season is such a stressful time for families. Too often they have not made as much progress as they would like over the summer and thus find themselves at the start of a busy school year with too much to do. Rigorous classes are demanding, extracurricular activities are starting up again, college deadlines are looming, and life starts to go a little bit sideways.
The temptation is to just get it done.
I would encourage you to stop. Take a deep breath. Let’s regain some perspective. You’ve worked hard at parenting for the last 18 years. Your child has labored through tough classes preparing their minds to make the most of a college opportunity. They have given their best at their many activities and discovered things about themselves in the process.
Don’t throw it away with a sloppy application and carelessly written essays and documents. Take the time to carefully proof each and every application entry, every essay, every short answer question, every school document you prepare. Don’t upload anything until it is perfect! Even then, be sure to use the Print Preview feature on Common App and many other applications that allows you to print out the complete application. Set is aside for a few days so you can review with a rested mind and clear eyes. Once you have determined that there are no spelling errors, nothing has shifted in transmission and that nothing has truncated, then and only then, hit Submit.
A carefully crafted college application where each piece tells a part of the story will make your child stand out among the thousands of students applying this year and give them a much better shot at acceptance. It will also make them better candidates for scholarships. We are still early in the application season. Take your time and do it right.
