I love working with passionate kids. Teens can do amazing things if given half a chance. There is a freshness in their dreams and the energy to carry them along the path of their imaginings. Yet, while this fervent belief in themselves is part of what will help them be successful in adulthood, just being enthusiastic isn’t enough. Teens routinely overestimate their abilities and underestimate what life will throw at them.
Those of us who guide these ardent adolescents must do so carefully. We need to assist them in developing actual, marketable skill sets to give feet to those dreams. It is important to help them cultivate an intellectual seriousness about the subjects they study and the interests they pursue. We must set the academic bar high knowing that their abilities will stretch to meet the challenge.
Enthusiasm is great. Wisdom is better
