The next few weeks are busy ones for seniors who have just received decisions from their college applications. April is known as visit month and students will be traveling to colleges all over the country to get a feel for campus life. It is important to take these stays seriously and go with a list of questions that need to be answered. This goes for the student who thinks they absolutely know where they want to go as well as the student who is having trouble deciding.
I’ve seen Visit Weekends overwhelmingly convince a student to come to that particular college as well as drastically change minds that were already made up. One young woman of my acquaintance knew for years that her first choice college was a famous tech school. She had gone to a summer camp there and thought she knew the atmosphere. At home, she literally had a shrine in her room with memorabilia from that college. When the acceptance came, she was overjoyed. Then she went for Visit Weekend, hated it, and decamped for another great school on the opposite coast. She found that her tribe was located in an unexpected place.
It is critical that students listen to their hearts when making this important decision. If they have researched schools carefully and applied to colleges that will be a good fit, it often comes down to a gut feeling that a certain place is right for them. My daughter described it as “coming home.”
