The burdens of life tend overwhelm the small moments that could provide stability and happiness. The To Do List drives us forward, the never-ending demands keep us running, the responsibilities we’ve assumed tend to multiply instead of shrink.
If you find yourself drowning in the sea of busy-ness, it may be time to step back and consider if you’ve made room in your life for something just because you love it.
As a mom, I consider myself about as dedicated as they come. I abhor selfishness in any parent. Yet over the years I have learned that, unless I purposefully cultivate moments of joy, life seems stale and serving others becomes a burden.
It doesn’t have to be much – a wonderful book, a community lecture, a painting in progress, a piano score to work through, a walk on the beach, a phone call to an old friend, or breakfast alone in a tiny café. Different things nurture different people. But we are all humans with limited internal resources and we need time and space to replenish.
Maintaining a discipline is also centering whether it is music practice, an artistic pursuit, or training for a 5K race. The demands on our body or our mind take us into another realm, an old familiar one at the root of who we are.
If you find that spring has not brought the usual delight, I encourage you to take some time to see what things, if any, are in your life just for love. If you can’t find anything ,it is time to make some changes. Not only will it make you a better parent, but it will give your children a healthy example.
