I am not a shopper. You could not pay me enough money to enter the Black Friday buying spree. However, I have been known to wait in line for hours, to sprint to the section of interest, and start unapologetically grabbing up the things on my list. You are probably wondering what in the world could tempt a self-professed, normally gracious introvert into such behavior. There is only one thing that could draw out that type of conduct: library sales.
I have always been a book lover and the highlight of my Christmas growing up was the annual stack of books that would keep me enthralled for days. In the lean years when I began homeschooling and discovered that the local library did not have a good selection of what my intelligent children needed, I resorted to library sales around the state where the wonderful old material was being dumped. My finds were the basis of our homeschooling and the foundation of the library for my grandchildren to come. Not a day goes by that I don’t pull one of those books off the shelf for reference, to re-read, to get a better perspective of a current event.
Books, rather than experiences, were the core of our educational plan. They are the underpinning of who we are as a family. I still give my kids books for Christmas and they, in turn, give me great things to read.
If you are looking for a fabulous book to give your high school student who is struggling to focus, your college kid who has to learn a great deal quickly, a young professional trying to get to the top of his/her game, or yourself if there aren’t enough hours in the day, I just finished (and highly recommend) Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport. This young man is the author of multiple books that follow his personal search for a balanced life, while at the same time achieve academic, and later professional success. He has attained that and shows us how to live a calm life that is also rich.
