It is hard to believe that we are already facing the end of the fall semester. Didn’t it just start yesterday? The speed at which life passes can leave us all a little breathless. One minute we are teaching our children to walk and talk, the next we are having adult conversations with them as they are contemplating high school courses and activities. We turn around and they are gone off to college, career, and a life of their own.
In hindsight, I wish I had lived more in the center of each day: sharing discoveries, enjoying childish chatter, just absorbing the moments that pass too quickly. I would have relaxed more, taken more hikes, enjoyed more sunsets.
As we approach the Christmas season, may I encourage you to slow the pace and pay attention to your own needs as well as those of your family. The house doesn’t have to be perfect, it is not essential to attend every party, it is not mandatory that you play the games of one-upmanship so prevalent in our culture. In fact, it isn’t necessary that you uphold every tradition that has ever edged its way into your life. Perhaps you don’t get everyone’s favorite dish made or find the perfect gift for all the extended family. Give yourself permission to just enjoy. Your kids will remember your peacefulness long after they’ve forgotten the few little things that weren’t attended to.
